Norvite's Royal Warrant Assurance Schemes

Norvite was founded in 1973 by Alistair Pirie, Roy Matheson and Gilbert Reid who left Spencers Feeds when it was taken over by Unilever. Over the next 22 years, Norvite built a substantial business supplying supplements and protein concentrates direct to farms throughout Scotland and the Scottish Isles. The success of the business was based on excellent quality products and first class customer service.

Norvite Founding Team

Norvite was proud to celebrate 40 years in business in 2013. The company was founded in 1973 by Alistair Pirie, Roy Matheson and Gilbert Reid who previously worked together at Spencers Feeds. Four decades on, Alistair Pirie remains an Executive Director of Norvite and is a cornerstone of the company.

In the years that followed its inception, Norvite built up a substantial business manufacturing and supplying supplements and protein concentrates direct to farms throughout Scotland and the Scottish Isles.

Our success was built on the provision of high-quality products and first-class customer service. In 1995, with no natural succession plan in place, the directors sold the company to SCA Nutrition, one of the major suppliers of piglet diets to Norvite. Shortly afterwards, SCA along with Nutec, Norvite and other subsidiary businesses, was itself acquired by multinational agribusiness Provimi.

Norvite became a private, locally-owned business once more in 2005 when Edward Smith led a management buyout from Provimi. Since then, Norvite has maintained a strong relationship with its former parent company (now owned by US-based Cargill), providing ongoing access to cutting-edge global scientific research and technology.

Since 1998, against the backdrop of falling livestock numbers in Scotland and in order to maintain a strong business, we have diversified into complete blended feeds, mobile milling and - most recently - retailing to the leisure feed market. However, supplying farm feed supplements is still very much the core of our business and indeed Norvite is honoured to hold a Royal Warrant from Her Majesty The Queen as Manufacturers of Specialist Animal Feeds and Supplements.

From humble beginnings in a haulage shed at Carpenter's Croft, Wardhouse, Norvite's infrastructure has developed in line with our growing business. Alongside the blending plants in Ayrshire and Aberdeenshire and the high-tech mobile mill and mix machinery, a state of the art mineral supplements mill was commissioned in substantial new buildings at Wardhouse in 2012. This investment has enabled us to ensure a consistently high product quality and provides the capacity to produce bespoke supplements for specific farm requirements.

Since our inception, we have developed, strengthened and maintained enduring relationships and partnerships with our suppliers, our business partners and with our customers. We are proud that very many of these have continued from our early days – a reflection of the value we place on the application of progressive science to the production of quality feeds and supplements.
